PowerShell Virtual Group of PASS April Newsletter

It’s been quiet at the PowerShell VG for the last several weeks as I took time off to welcome a new baby to the family, (more on that in later post).  In the meantime, I just wanted to share the PowerShell Virtual Group of PASS April Newsletter that is going out to 4,500+ subscribers this morning.  We have two great sessions lined up and I want as many people to know about them as possible!  🙂

In this newsletter:

  • Today’s session: Automate Glen Berry’s DMV Script with PowerShell
  • May 17th session: Gathering Data for Trending with PowerShell
  • SQL Data Partners Podcast on PowerShell, SQL Server and dbatools!

Automate Glen Berry’s DMV Script with PowerShell

Presented by Sander Stad

If you know Glenn Berry you probably know his DMV scripts which are amazing to analyze your databases and instances. But if you face the 1500 lines of code, you don’t want to execute each query manually especially if you’re handling multiple instances with multiple databases.

We’ll discuss the thought process how the script was developed, some of the pitfalls that come with PowerShell and tips and tricks to take home. If you like the DMV scripts by Glenn Berry and want to know more about PowerShell come and attend this session.

Gathering Data for Trending with PowerShell

Presented by Ben Miller

Think of questions that you could ask about an environment that is database rich. How many databases do you have, across how many servers? How has the data grown and how much disk space will we need over the next 2 years? So many questions to be asked and there are not a lot if any views or functions that can tell you what happened a day ago or even last week. Do you know how many databases you had at the beginning of the year or at the end of the year without having to dig through logs or other places? This session will cover using PowerShell to get information quickly and putting it in a repository that you can use the answer these questions. Not only that, but you can use it proactively in your career as a DBA. PowerShell has some great tools and using SMO you can gather and store all that information. Join me in the quest to become a PowerShell DBA and have information at your fingertips to help you in your career.

SQL Data Partners Podcast on PowerShell, SQL Server and dbatools!

Featuring Chrissy, Aaron, Rob and Constantine Kokkinos

Last week’s SQL Data Partners Podcast featured officers of the PowerShell Virtual Group and members of the dbatools team talking about the SQL community PowerShell module, dbatools. Chrissy even answered some #sqlfamily questions. We all had a really fun time! Tune in and listen along – we’re trying to beat the weekly play record set by Randolph West’s Indexing series 😉

As always, catch the recordings of last month’s sessions on our YouTube channel SQLPS.io/video
