PowerShell Virtual Group of PASS January Newsletter

We spend way too much time each month drafting the newsletters for the PowerShell Group of PASS.  But hey, we’re database people, not email mavens, and the newsletter does go out to over 4,000 people so it’s worth taking time to try and get it right (even though we don’t always).

There’s a bunch of good info in this month’s newsletter about upcoming sessions and other things the team found interesting so I thought I’d repost it here in case you aren’t on our email list.  Here it is:

We’re ready to kick the year off with more SQL PowerShell, how about you?

In this newsletter:

  • This week’s session: PowerShell RunSpaces
  • Bonus Session! Linux OS Fundamentals for the SQL Admin
  • February session: Converting Unreliable Deployments Into Consistent Releases
  • SQL PowerShell Group By Sessions
  • Backing Up SQL Server Databases is Easier in PowerShell than T-SQL

PowerShell Runspaces: Putting your pants on both legs at a time

What’s better than writing an awesome PowerShell script to automate something? Writing the same script but making it automate something multiple times across multiple locations at the same time! PowerShell runspaces can turn your normal single-threaded scripts into rabid hydras on angel dust (but in a good way). In this session you’ll learn about:

  • PowerShell runspaces: what they are, and how they work
  • Creating and monitoring runspaces
  • Using runspaces in your scripts: do’s and don’ts
  • A couple examples of how they can help (and when they can’t).

Drew Furgiuele is a senior DBA at IGS Energy who’s passionate about SQL Server and PowerShell. When he’s not accidently dropping tables in production, he likes writing scripts, venting about SQL Server Replication, wiring electronics, and playing with his dog.

Linux OS Fundamentals for the SQL Admin

PowerShell and SQL Server are now available on Linux and management wants you to leverage this shift in technology to more effectively manage your systems, but you’re a Windows admin!  Don’t fear! It’s just an operating system! It has all the same components Windows has and in this session we’ll show you that. We will look at the Linux operating system architecture and show you how to interact with and manage Linux system. By the end of this session you’ll be ready to go back to the office and get started working with Linux with a fundamental understanding of how it works.

Converting Unreliable Deployments Into Consistent Releases

The deployment process is frustrating; an object is missing, an object is deployed in the wrong order or an incorrect version. Our goal is to deploy the same script in Development, QA, UAT, Prod and any other environment with proper testing. Together we will discover how to separate each object for proper order deployment. We will only release objects which have been changed. Deployments can cause you trouble but we will provide a reliable deployment and version control process. Join Thomas Norman as he shows you how PowerShell can help us accomplish this goal.

SQL PowerShell Group By Sessions

Group By is free, virtual database training by the community, for the community.

Backing Up SQL Server Databases is Easier in PowerShell than T-SQL

Several of our members have written a number of good PowerShell + SQL Server articles out recently, we’ve included some of the best ones we’ve found. If you spot a good article, send it to us and we may include it in the next email blast.

As always, the recording for today’s session will be posted to our YouTube channel, subscribe to be notified when it is ready!
